What is ICM in poker?
The Independent Chip Model estimates how much each tournament chip stack is worth in money. Unlike a cash game, tournament chips cannot be redeemed at face value, and doubling a stack does not usually double its tournament dollar value.
ICM combines the remaining stack distribution with the payout structure. Short stacks retain some chance of reaching a paid position, while larger stacks cannot win more than the total remaining prize pool.
How the ICM calculation works
Enter every active player’s stack and each remaining payout. The calculator evaluates the possible finishing orders and returns the estimated dollar value of every stack.
The result describes the current stack values before a hand is played. It does not account for player skill, position, future blinds, or deal-making. Those factors may still matter when applying ICM to a real decision.
When to use an ICM calculator
ICM is most useful near tournament bubbles, final tables, satellites, and other payout jumps where preserving chips has a different value from accumulating them. Compare the value before and after a possible outcome to understand the tournament risk attached to a decision.
